In short, it is the research, analysis, and reporting done in cases with legal implications. Creative resources outside of the realm of conventional genealogical research are used to mine this research gold. Some describe it as “the study of kinship and identity as it pertains to the law,” however, I believe professional genealogist Megan Smolenyak’s term “reverse genealogy” described it the best. In forensic cases, you begin with the deceased, and you look for the living, compared to conventional genealogy, which starts with the living and looks for the deceased.
